The walled circuit
The wall runs unbroken around the historic centre, and its towers give the outline a scalloped rhythm. On the poster it is the strongest line on the sheet, a clear boundary between old and new.

Te mapa
Seen from above, Ávila is defined by a single closed line. The medieval wall, one of the most complete in Europe, traces a long, irregular rectangle around the old town. Its dozens of round towers show up on the map as a beaded edge. Inside, lanes run short and crooked between small plazas, while the newer city grows outward in looser blocks to the east and south.
The city sits on a rise above the Adaja river, which runs along its western side. At over 1,100 metres, Ávila is the highest provincial capital in Spain. That height explains the open plateau around it: roads leave the walls in long lines across the Castilian meseta, and the river crossing below the old town gives the west side a pattern of its own.
The old town and its churches outside the walls are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is known as the birthplace of Saint Teresa of Ávila. An Ávila map poster tells that story in line work: the fortified core, the gates where streets break through, and the river edge. It is drawn cleanly enough that the wall reads as a shape before anything else.
The wall runs unbroken around the historic centre, and its towers give the outline a scalloped rhythm. On the poster it is the strongest line on the sheet, a clear boundary between old and new.
The apse of the cathedral is built directly into the eastern stretch of the wall, so the church and the defences share one edge. The map records this unusual detail quite literally.
West of the walls, the ground drops to the Adaja river and its old bridge. The water and the slope open up space on this side, giving the composition air beside the dense core.

Koteā ko Ávila
People hang Ávila for its clarity. Few towns have an outline this easy to recognise. It suits anyone who has walked the ramparts, studied in Castile or feels a connection to Saint Teresa. It also works as a quiet architectural piece for guests who have never been.
