Te mapa
Az Zubayr lies a short distance south-west of Basra, where the irrigated land near the Shatt al-Arab gives way to open desert. It grew near the site of early Islamic Basra and is named after Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, a companion of the Prophet whose tomb and mosque stand in the town. On a map, the old centre is a close, irregular web of lanes around that shrine.
Beyond the historic core, newer neighbourhoods are laid out in larger rectangular blocks along wide roads. The built-up area extends toward Basra, and the two are increasingly joined. Because the land around the town is flat and empty, the edges of an Az Zubayr map poster are sharp, with streets ending abruptly where the desert begins.
For centuries the town was a stop on caravan routes between southern Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula. Today it is better known for the large oil field that bears its name. Roads, pipelines and industrial sites cross the surrounding plain and add long straight lines to the otherwise open landscape of the map.
The old town around the mosque of Zubayr ibn al-Awwam is a compact area of narrow, winding lanes, the densest and least regular part of the map.
Newer residential areas follow broad avenues and rectangular blocks, a clear change in rhythm from the tight fabric of the original town at the centre.
The built-up area stops cleanly at the flat desert, and the only lines beyond it are roads and service routes heading toward the oil fields.
