Te mapa
Azamino is a neighbourhood in Aoba Ward, in the northwest of Yokohama. It was developed as part of the Tama Den-en-toshi planned residential area along the Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line. The land here is hilly, and the streets curve along ridges and valley floors instead of following a grid. From above, the result is an organic pattern of loops, cul-de-sacs and pocket parks.
Azamino Station is the focus of the district. It is served by the Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line toward Shibuya and is the terminus of the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line. Shops and apartment blocks gather around the station, while quieter streets of houses spread across the surrounding slopes. Green strips and small parks mark the steeper ground.
An Azamino map poster captures a kind of suburb that is typical of Tokyo's commuter belt, yet unusual to see drawn out. The rail line cuts through in a clean arc, the station forms a dense node and the streets wrap around the hills in patterns that look almost like contour lines in black and white.
The station links the Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line with the end of the Blue Line subway. It forms the busiest node on the map and the district's commercial centre.
Residential roads follow the hilly terrain in loops and curves, so the pattern looks very different from the grids of central Tokyo or Yokohama.
Small parks and wooded strips sit on slopes too steep for building. They break up the dense residential fabric with quiet open shapes.
