Te mapa
Kokubunji lies in the Tama area of western Tokyo, on the Musashino plateau. The Chuo Line runs east to west through the city, and Kokubunji station, where several lines meet, is its busiest point. Around it the street network is the dense, fine-grained mesh typical of Tokyo suburbs, with narrow lanes filling the blocks between larger roads.
The land is not entirely flat. A low escarpment known as the Kokubunji cliff line runs across the south of the city. Springs emerge along its foot and feed small streams such as the Nogawa. Greenery follows this edge, including the Tonogayato Garden, a landscaped estate garden near the station.
The city is named after the Musashi Kokubun-ji, a provincial temple founded in the eighth century under Emperor Shōmu, whose excavated site survives below the escarpment. A Kokubunji map poster shows how a quiet residential city grew around an ancient temple site, a railway junction and a line of springs.

Several rail lines meet at Kokubunji station, and the densest cluster of streets and buildings gathers around this busy interchange.
The remains of the ancient provincial temple occupy open ground below the escarpment, a quiet space surrounded by residential lanes.
