Backnang lies northeast of Stuttgart in the Rems-Murr district, where the River Murr winds through a valley surrounded by gentle hills. The old town sits on rising ground above a bend in the river, and the Stiftskirche and its neighbouring buildings are at the top. For centuries Backnang was known for leather. Tanneries lined the Murr, and the town still calls itself a Gerberstadt, a tanners' town.
