Te mapa
Bangor grew where the Kenduskeag Stream flows into the Penobscot River, at the upper limit of navigation for ocean-going ships. In the nineteenth century that position made it a major lumber port, sometimes called the lumber capital of the world. Logs were driven down the Penobscot from the north Maine woods and shipped out from the city's wharves.
On the map, the Penobscot forms Bangor's eastern edge, and bridges cross to the neighbouring city of Brewer. The Kenduskeag cuts through downtown in a narrow curving channel, with older commercial blocks crowded around it. Residential streets climb the slopes behind, and the Interstate loops around the city's western side past the airport.
A Bangor map poster brings out that riverside logic: the broad Penobscot, the tighter line of the stream, and the old core set where they meet. The city is also known as the home of writer Stephen King, whose house has become a quiet point of pilgrimage for readers.

This stream winds through downtown to join the Penobscot, and the city's oldest commercial blocks cluster along its banks.
The Interstate curves around the western side of the city, putting a long, smooth arc around the older street grid.
