Te mapa
Barbalha lies in the Cariri region in the south of Ceará, Brazil, close to Juazeiro do Norte and Crato, with which it forms one of the main urban clusters of the Northeast interior. The town sits at the foot of the Chapada do Araripe, a long plateau whose green escarpment rises to the south, and its streets spread across the gentler land below.
The slopes of the Araripe hold springs that have made this area unusually green for the semi-arid interior, and historically supported sugarcane farms and mills. Barbalha is best known for the Festa do Pau da Bandeira, a festival in honour of Saint Anthony in which a large wooden pole is carried through the streets, drawing visitors every year.
A Barbalha map poster shows a town between plateau and plain. The compact historic centre, the newer neighbourhoods and the roads leading toward Juazeiro and Crato sit against the green bulk of the Chapada, which frames the map to the south. It is a clear portrait of a town shaped by water, farming and a strong local festival tradition.
The plateau's escarpment rises south of the town, forming a broad, natural boundary to the map and the source of local springs.
The older streets of Barbalha form a compact grid around the main church and squares, the heart of the town's festival life.
Roads link Barbalha to Juazeiro do Norte and Crato, placing it within a closely connected cluster of towns in southern Ceará.
