Te mapa
Barra do Garças lies in eastern Mato Grosso, at the point where the Garças River flows into the Araguaia. On a map the rivers define the town. The Araguaia marks the state border with Goiás, and Aragarças sits on the opposite bank, while Pontal do Araguaia lies across the Garças, so three towns face one another around the confluence.
The town's grid spreads back from the riverbanks toward the hills of the Serra Azul, which rise just behind the town and are protected as a state park. In the dry season, sandbars and beaches appear along the Araguaia, and they are a major attraction for visitors from across the region.
A Barra do Garças map poster emphasises this meeting of waters. Two wide rivers join in the frame, bridges connect the towns, and the regular grid of streets contrasts with the curves of the banks and the empty space of the hills. It is a map built around water and the lines that cross it.
The Garças meets the Araguaia at the edge of town, a strong Y-shape of water that anchors the whole composition.
Road bridges link Barra do Garças with Aragarças in Goiás and Pontal do Araguaia, joining three towns across two rivers.
Hills rise directly behind the town, so the street grid ends against a large open area of protected upland.
