Te mapa
Barra lies near the southern end of the Outer Hebrides. It is a compact island of hills, machair (low, grassy coastal land) and white beaches facing the Atlantic. From above it is roughly round with a long northern arm. A single road circles the island along the coast, around a hilly, largely empty centre. The pattern is so simple that the road itself becomes one of the main lines on the poster.
The main village, Castlebay, sits on the south coast around a sheltered bay. There, Kisimul Castle, the seat of the MacNeils, stands on a rock in the water. To the south, a causeway links Barra with Vatersay. At the northern tip, the airport uses the beach of Traigh Mhor as its runway, so flight times depend on the tide.
The writer Compton Mackenzie lived on Barra and is buried at Eoligarry, near the beach airfield. The island was also a filming location for Whisky Galore, the film of his novel. A Barra map poster shows an island where every journey follows the same loop, and where the sea and the tide set the terms.

The medieval castle stands on a small rocky islet in the bay at Castlebay. On the map it is a tiny mark offshore from the village streets.
The wide beach at the northern end serves as the island's airstrip at low tide. On the poster it appears as a broad, open shape of sand.
