Barrhead lies in East Renfrewshire, where the Glasgow suburbs meet the moorland to the south. The Levern Water runs through the town, and the railway to Glasgow crosses it on a clear diagonal. The main street runs along the valley floor, and the housing estates spread up the slopes on either side, laid out in loops and crescents.
The town grew up with the textile industry and later became known for manufacturing sanitaryware, a trade that made the Barrhead name familiar across Britain. Today it is largely residential, with a direct rail link to central Glasgow. The open hills of the Fereneze Braes rise above the town, and the landscape beyond is rural.
