Basauri lies just south-east of Bilbao, in a narrow valley where the Nervión and Ibaizabal rivers join. From above, the town is shaped by that meeting of waters. Streets follow the riverbanks and the valley floor, while the surrounding slopes push the housing into tight, stacked blocks that climb uphill where the ground allows.
The town grew as part of the industrial belt of Greater Bilbao, and rail lines and major roads still run through the valley beside the rivers. On the map, those transport corridors run parallel to the water, and the result is a series of long, narrow bands of city squeezed between hillsides.
