Batalha is a municipality in the interior of Alagoas, in north-east Brazil, well away from the state's coast. From above the town is a small, concentrated grid of streets with a few main roads leading out into the countryside, where fields, pasture and scattered farmsteads take over.
This is sertão country, with a semi-arid climate and a landscape shaped by long dry seasons. Towns like Batalha grew as local centres for the farms around them, and the map shows that role clearly: a dense centre where roads meet, and a thin pattern of rural tracks spreading into the surrounding land.
