Te mapa
Batu Arang lies north-west of Kuala Lumpur, near Rawang in Selangor. Its name means 'coal stone', and for much of the twentieth century it was the centre of coal mining in Malaya. The town was laid out by the mining company in the early 1900s, and parts of that planned layout can still be seen in its streets.
From above, the town is small and compact, surrounded by low hills and green land. Former mine pits have filled with water over the years, so lakes and ponds appear on the map around the settlement. These irregular bodies of water give the landscape a patchy, broken look that is unusual for the area.
A Batu Arang map poster records a place whose industrial past is still written into the ground. The old core, the housing rows once built for workers, the former mine areas and the roads connecting to the wider Klang Valley all appear in one frame, reduced to clean lines and open spaces.
Former coal workings have left lakes and irregular open ground around the town. They form distinctive shapes that interrupt the surrounding green.
The older part of town was laid out as a company settlement. Its orderly streets remain the most regular pattern on the map.
Gentle hills surround the settlement and bend the roads leading in and out. They soften the edges of the poster.
