Valley lines
The High Street, the Grand Union Canal and the main railway line run side by side along the valley. Together they give the poster its strong horizontal structure.

Berkhamsted Map Poster & Print
Berkhamsted is a market town in Hertfordshire, set in the narrow valley of the River Bulbourne in the Chiltern Hills. From above it is long and linear. The High Street runs along the valley floor, the Grand Union Canal and the West Coast Main Line run parallel to it, and residential streets climb the slopes on either side.
Next to the railway station are the earthworks of Berkhamsted Castle, a motte-and-bailey castle where William the Conqueror is said to have received the submission of English leaders in 1066. The novelist Graham Greene was born in the town, and his father was headmaster of Berkhamsted School.
A Berkhamsted map poster shows how strongly the valley has shaped the town, with its main lines all running in the same direction. The rounded outline of the castle and the woodland and commons on the higher ground beyond the valley complete the picture.

Castle earthworks
Berkhamsted Castle's moats and mound sit beside the station. On the map they form concentric rounded shapes, unlike anything else in the town.
Streets on the slopes
Residential roads climb both sides of the valley in curves and loops, filling out the upper and lower edges of the print.
