Bhadrak lies on the flat coastal plain of northern Odisha, a short distance inland from the Bay of Bengal. The Salandi River runs along the town, and its course shapes the layout of the older neighbourhoods. The streets are dense and irregular near the centre, where markets and homes stand close together, and they loosen into scattered settlements and fields as you move outward.
The main railway line between Howrah and Chennai passes through Bhadrak, and National Highway 16 runs nearby. On the map, these long straight lines cut across the more organic street pattern of the town, which has grown up around its temples, markets and the river.
