Bhīnmāl lies in Jalore district in southwestern Rajasthan, on flat, semi-arid land that runs towards the Gujarat border. Its historic centre is dense, with narrow lanes that twist between houses, temples and small bazaars. Newer neighbourhoods spread out from this core along straighter roads, and fields and scrub begin soon after.
The town is one of the oldest in the region. Known in early records as Bhillamala or Shrimal, it was once an important capital of the Gurjara lands. It is also associated with the seventh-century mathematician and astronomer Brahmagupta, whose work on arithmetic and zero is still cited in histories of mathematics.
