Bhupalpally is the headquarters of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district in northern Telangana, a region of forests, rivers and coal. On a map the town appears as a mix of an older settlement, planned residential colonies built for industrial workers, and roads that lead out toward mines, a power station and the surrounding villages.
Coal mining by the Singareni Collieries Company is central to the town's economy, and the Kakatiya Thermal Power Station lies nearby. The district stretches east to the Godavari River, and much of it is covered by forest. Large irrigation works on the Godavari, including parts of the Kaleshwaram project, also lie within the district.
