Te mapa
Bolhrad is a town in the Odesa region of south-western Ukraine, in the historic area of southern Bessarabia known as the Budjak. From above, its clearest feature is a very regular grid of wide, straight streets, the sign of a planned town. The northern end of Lake Yalpuh lies close to the town.
Bolhrad was founded in the early nineteenth century by Bulgarian settlers, and it has remained a centre of the Bulgarian community in the region. Its Transfiguration Cathedral and its historic Bulgarian gymnasium are among the town's best-known buildings, both part of that heritage.
A Bolhrad map poster shows the order of a planned settlement. Long parallel streets cross at right angles, blocks repeat evenly across the town, and the lake adds a soft natural edge. The result is one of the most geometric small-town maps in the region.
Wide, straight streets cross at right angles and form an unusually regular grid. It reflects the town's deliberate nineteenth-century planning.
The lake stretches away beside the town. Its open water and irregular shoreline contrast with the strict geometry of the streets.
The Transfiguration Cathedral stands in the town centre, where the grid opens around its grounds and gives the map a clear focal point.
