The Congo River
The river is so wide here that it covers a large part of the frame. Braided channels and islands give its surface a soft, layered texture.

Te mapa
Bolobo stands on the east bank of the Congo River in Mai-Ndombe province, where the river is very wide and scattered with long islands and sandbanks. On a map the water dominates. A broad band of river fills one side of the sheet, and the town follows the shoreline in a strip of streets and paths.
Away from the river the settlement becomes looser. Tracks and small roads lead inland through wooded and grassy country, and houses spread out in scattered clusters. The far bank belongs to the Republic of the Congo, so the river here is also an international border, crossed by boats rather than bridges.
Bolobo has a long history as a river stop, and it was the site of a Protestant mission in the late nineteenth century. Today it is a local centre on a stretch of river with few large towns. A Bolobo map poster shows the settlement as it relates to the water: a thin line of streets beside one of the world's great rivers.
The river is so wide here that it covers a large part of the frame. Braided channels and islands give its surface a soft, layered texture.
The town follows the bank. Streets and landing places run parallel to the water, the natural spine of the settlement.
Beyond the shore, paths and small roads spread into the surrounding country and thin gradually into open land.

Koteā ko Bolobo
Bolobo is for people who know the river: those who grew up on its bank, worked on its boats or have family along its shores. The map turns a remote place into something you can see every day.
