Te mapa
Inkisi sits in Kongo Central province in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the river that shares its name. The town lies on the main corridor between Kinshasa and the port of Matadi, and on a map that corridor is its backbone. A highway and a railway run through the town, with streets on either side that gradually loosen into scattered compounds and fields.
The Inkisi River winds through the landscape in broad loops before flowing north toward the Congo River. Its course divides the map naturally and adds a sinuous line against the straighter paths of road and rail. The neighbouring town of Kisantu lies close by. It is known for a botanical garden founded by Jesuit missionaries.
Around the town the land rolls in low hills of farmland and woodland, cut by smaller streams. An Inkisi map poster shows a place defined by its river and by movement, a stopping point on the route between the capital and the coast. It is a map for people who know the town, whether as home or as a halt on the road west.
The river loops through the area in wide curves on its way north. It gives the map a strong, flowing line and forms a natural edge to parts of the town.
The main road and railway between the capital and the Atlantic port pass through town. They form the straight transport lines along which the settlement has grown.
Beyond the built-up area, low hills, fields and streams fill the frame. They give the edges of the poster a quieter, more open texture than the town centre.
