Te mapa
Uíge is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Angola, set on a hilly plateau well inland from the Atlantic. The terrain is rolling and green, and from above the city does not form a rigid grid. Its streets follow ridges and slopes instead. The older colonial centre is fairly compact, and newer neighbourhoods spread along the surrounding hills.
During the colonial period the town was known as Carmona, and the region around it became one of Angola's main coffee-growing areas. That agricultural history still shows on the map. Roads leading out of the city wind through farmland, small settlements and patches of forest rather than running straight across open plains.
Today the city is the commercial and administrative centre for a large rural province near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A Uíge map poster shows the city at a comfortable scale, where the central streets, the hillside neighbourhoods and the roads out into the countryside all stay clearly readable.
The older part of town forms a compact cluster of more regular streets, laid out during the colonial era. It acts as the clear anchor of the map.
Around the core, residential areas follow the slopes, so streets curve and branch in irregular patterns. This gives the map an organic, hand-drawn quality.
Main roads leave the city in several directions and wind through hills and farmland that once made the region a centre of Angolan coffee production.

Koteā ko Uíge
Uíge is a city people carry with them after moving to Luanda, Lisbon or elsewhere, and its map offers a calm, graphic reminder of home. The winding hill streets make an attractive composition even for those who have never been.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name, a year or the old name Carmona. Pick one of five styles, Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, to suit the space.
