Bolton lies in the north-west of Greater Manchester, at the foot of the West Pennine Moors. On a map the town centre forms a dense knot of streets around Victoria Square and the town hall, with main roads radiating outward in all directions. Between them, rows of terraced houses make long parallel lines, typical of the industrial towns of Lancashire.
Bolton grew as one of the great cotton spinning centres of the industrial revolution. Samuel Crompton invented the spinning mule here in the 1770s, and many large mill buildings still stand. The town is also home to Bolton Wanderers, one of the twelve founding members of the Football League in 1888. The River Croal runs through the centre.
