Te mapa
Liverpool faces west across the River Mersey, and the estuary shapes everything on its map. A long chain of docks runs along the eastern bank for miles, built as basins and locks that show up as crisp rectangles of water. Behind them the city centre climbs gently uphill, and main roads spread outward like spokes toward the suburbs and the long arc of Queens Drive.
At the Pier Head stand the Three Graces, including the Royal Liver Building with its two Liver Birds, and beside them the restored Albert Dock. Two road tunnels and a rail tunnel pass beneath the river to Birkenhead and Wallasey, so on paper the Mersey is a wide, unbroken band of water. Up the hill, Hope Street links the city's two cathedrals, Anglican and Catholic.
The city is known worldwide as the home of the Beatles and of two football clubs whose grounds face each other across Stanley Park. A Liverpool map poster shows the whole sweep, from the dock walls and the ordered terraces of the Georgian Quarter to the green ovals of Sefton Park and Newsham Park.
A chain of dock basins stretches north and south along the riverbank, drawn as sharp geometric shapes of water that make one of the most distinctive waterfronts in Britain.
The Anglican and Catholic cathedrals stand at either end of Hope Street, a short straight road on the ridge above the centre that joins two very different buildings.
A large Victorian park south of the centre with curving drives, a lake and a palm house, its oval outline standing out clearly among the terraced streets.
