Te mapa
Birkenhead lies on the Wirral Peninsula, directly across the River Mersey from Liverpool. On a map the town is framed by the river and its docks to the east, with a grid of Victorian streets extending inland. Road tunnels and ferry routes link it to Liverpool, making the river both a boundary and a connection.
The town grew rapidly in the nineteenth century around shipbuilding and docks. Hamilton Square, laid out in the 1820s, forms a formal centre of terraced buildings around a green. To the west lies Birkenhead Park, opened in 1847 as one of the first publicly funded parks, which later influenced the design of Central Park in New York.
A Birkenhead map poster shows the balance between industry and planning: the long lines of docks and railways, the regular streets of the town centre and the curving paths of the park. It is a map of a place shaped by the river and by Victorian ambitions for urban life.
Docks and quays line the river edge, facing Liverpool across the water and forming a strong eastern boundary.
A formal square of terraces and gardens marks the town's planned centre, clearly visible in the grid.
The park's curving paths and lakes create a large open space, contrasting with the surrounding streets.
