Bonnyrigg sits in Midlothian, a few miles south of Edinburgh, on high ground above the valley of the River North Esk. From above, the town has a traditional centre along its main street, surrounded by rings of residential streets from different decades: older terraces near the middle, then postwar estates, then newer developments at the edges.
Like much of Midlothian, Bonnyrigg grew with coal mining, and the pattern of housing still reflects the communities built around the pits. Just to the west, the neighbouring village of Lasswade sits down in the wooded river valley, so the map shows a clear drop from the town's plateau into the Esk's winding course.
Locally, the town is closely associated with Bonnyrigg Rose, its long-established football club. A Bonnyrigg map poster shows a close-knit Scottish town between Edinburgh's southern edge and the open farmland of Midlothian, with the river valley giving the frame its one soft curve.
The river winds through a wooded valley along the town's western side, a curving line that contrasts with the more regular streets above.
A short main street forms the core of Bonnyrigg, with shops and older buildings, and residential areas spread outward in every direction.
Neighbourhoods from different eras form distinct street patterns: tight terraces, curving postwar crescents and newer cul-de-sacs, each visible on the map.
