Te mapa
Bremen stretches for kilometres along the River Weser in northwestern Germany. The old town lies on the right bank, and its outline is still marked by the former fortifications. The Wallanlagen, a park, follows the zigzag line of the old ramparts, with a curving moat in front. Inside, the streets are narrow and irregular. Outside, the nineteenth-century districts spread in a looser pattern.
At the centre is the Marktplatz, where the Town Hall and the Roland statue together form a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby are the Schnoor, a quarter of tiny lanes and small houses, and the Schlachte, a riverside promenade. The city is also known worldwide through the Grimm tale of the Town Musicians of Bremen, remembered with a bronze statue beside the Town Hall.
A Bremen map poster brings together the curve of the Weser, the star-like edge of the old town and the long harbour basins downstream. It is one of the most recognisable city plans in northern Germany, with a historic outline that stays readable even at small sizes. The Bürgerpark adds a large green mass to the north.
The former ramparts are now a park that follows a jagged, star-shaped line around the old town, and the moat in front of it traces the historic city limits.
The river curves through the city from southeast to northwest. It separates the old town from the Neustadt and leads toward the port areas downstream.
The oldest surviving residential quarter is a knot of very narrow lanes between the Marktplatz and the Weser, and it is the finest detail on the map.
