Brezina is in El Bayadh Province in western Algeria, where the Saharan Atlas gives way to the desert. It is an oasis settlement: the town grew up beside a wadi, and the palm grove along the watercourse is its lifeline. From above, the green belt of the grove sits sharply against the bare land around it.
The built-up area is compact. Older lanes lie close to the palms, and newer, more regular streets extend outwards. Roads run off across the open terrain towards other settlements in the province. A dam upstream holds water for the oasis, part of the careful water management that keeps the palms alive.
