Budge Budge Map Poster & Print
Budge Budge lies on the east bank of the Hooghly River, downstream from Kolkata in South 24 Parganas district. From above, the river is the dominant shape, a broad band of water bending past the town, with the built-up area following the bank in a long strip.
The riverfront is taken up by jute mills, jetties and petroleum storage depots, whose large round tanks are clear even in simple map lines. Behind them, dense residential lanes and a railway line run parallel to the river toward Kolkata.
The town has a significant place in Indian history. In 1914 the Komagata Maru, carrying Punjabi migrants refused entry to Canada, docked here, and many passengers were killed when police opened fire. A Budge Budge map poster shows an industrial river town with a long memory.
