Te mapa
Bungku is the seat of Morowali Regency in Central Sulawesi, on the coast of Tolo Bay. The town reads as a linear settlement, strung along the shoreline road with houses and lanes filling the narrow strip between the sea and the rising ground inland. Small rivers and creeks cut down to the bay, interrupting the coastal line at intervals.
The name also belongs to the former Bungku kingdom, whose historic centre lay in this area before it became part of modern Indonesia. Today the regency is better known for large-scale nickel processing further along the coast. Bungku itself remains a government town, where the main road, the waterfront and the offices of the regency shape the map.
A Bungku map poster is defined by its coastline. The irregular edge of the bay, with points and inlets, gives the map a strong outer contour. Inland, the street network fades into the hills. The black-and-white treatment keeps the contrast between sea, shore and slope clean, which works particularly well in the Noir style.
The coast runs the length of the town in a gently irregular line of small points and inlets, with open water filling one side of the map.
The main road follows the shore, and most of the town's streets branch off it. The result is a long, narrow settlement pattern.
Short rivers and streams descend from the hills and meet the bay, crossing the coastal road and breaking the town into sections.
