Te mapa
Kotamobagu sits in the interior of North Sulawesi, well away from the coast, in an upland basin framed by hills. From above the town is a loose, spreading network of roads laid over a valley floor, with rice fields and gardens filling the gaps between neighbourhoods. The streets follow the ground rather than a strict plan, bending with streams and slopes as they reach toward the surrounding villages.
The city is the traditional heart of the Bolaang Mongondow region. It was once the seat of a local kingdom, whose name still identifies the surrounding regencies. Today it is the market and service centre for the highlands. Roads from the coast and the farming districts meet here, and much of the region comes here to trade.
A Kotamobagu map poster shows the town as its setting has shaped it: a central cluster of streets, roads radiating along the valley, and a looser pattern at the edges where houses give way to farmland and hills. In monochrome, the soft outlines of the basin and its watercourses read almost like a contour drawing.
The town occupies a broad upland hollow. Its roads spread outward across fairly level ground before reaching the steeper slopes that close off the map.
Small rivers and irrigation channels thread through the outskirts. The open spaces between roads mark the rice fields that give this inland plain its farming character.
Roads leave the centre toward the coast and the neighbouring Bolaang Mongondow regencies, forming a clear hub pattern that explains the town's role as the region's market centre.
