Te mapa
Ternate lies off the west coast of Halmahera in North Maluku, and from above it is almost circular. The whole island is essentially one volcano, Mount Gamalama, which rises steeply from the sea to a central summit. Towns, roads and fields are pushed out toward the edges, so the map shows a ring of settlement around a green cone that is bare in places.
The city of Ternate spreads along the eastern shore, facing Halmahera and the neighbouring island of Tidore, and a coastal road loops around the whole island. Lava flows from past eruptions reach toward the sea in several places, and Lake Tolire lies near the coast on the north-west side. A Ternate Island map poster turns this ring-shaped layout into an elegant print.
For centuries Ternate was one of the world's main sources of cloves, and its sultanate was among the most powerful in the Moluccas. Portuguese and Dutch forts still stand along the coast. In 1858 the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace sent from here the essay on natural selection that prompted Darwin to publish his own theory.
The active volcano takes up the entire island. On the map its slopes form an open, roughly circular centre, with roads and villages kept to the lower flanks.
A road runs around the island along the shore, linking the city with villages on every side, and it gives the poster a clear, continuous outline.
Portuguese and Dutch fortifications survive along the coast, including Fort Oranje in the city. They are reminders of the spice trade that made the island famous.

Koteā ko Ternate Island
Ternate speaks to anyone interested in the spice trade, volcanoes or the history of natural science, and to families with roots in North Maluku. Its almost perfectly round shape makes a quietly striking poster.
You can personalise the title and subtitle with a family name, a year or coordinates, and choose one of five styles. The $9 download includes six print sizes, each as a 300 DPI PNG and a print-ready PDF.
