Te mapa
Bwizibwera is a town in Mbarara District in Uganda's Western Region, in the rolling hill country of Ankole. It grew along the main road that passes through the area, and from above it stretches out as a line of buildings following the tarmac, with side lanes running a short way into the hills before giving way to farms.
The landscape around it is green and undulating, used for cattle grazing, banana gardens and mixed farming. Ankole is known for its long-horned cattle, and pasture and farm plots fill much of the map around the town. Tracks wind between homesteads across the slopes rather than following a regular pattern.
A Bwizibwera map poster shows a town defined by its road: the main route running through the frame, a thin band of streets along it, and hillside farmland opening out on each side. The lines are few, but the composition is distinctive. For anyone from this part of Uganda, it is an honest picture of home.
The town grew along the main road through the district, and this line holds the whole map together from one side to the other.
Shops and houses gather in a narrow band along the road, the densest part of the map, with short lanes branching off.
Beyond the road, winding tracks connect homesteads and grazing land across the rolling Ankole hills.
