Cabrobó lies in the sertão of Pernambuco, on the northern bank of the São Francisco river. The surrounding country is semi-arid, with caatinga scrub on the higher ground and green, irrigated farmland close to the water. From above, the town is a compact grid pressed against the river, with islands and sandbanks breaking up the broad channel.
Cabrobó is known as the starting point of the northern axis of the São Francisco river transposition project, a large canal system built to carry water to dry areas of the Northeast. The intake and the first stretches of the canal appear on the map as long, straight engineered lines crossing an otherwise irregular landscape.
