Cajati lies in the Vale do Ribeira, the hilly and heavily forested south of São Paulo state. From above, the town follows the valley floor, with streets lined up along the river and main road, and neighbourhoods reaching into side hollows wherever the ground allows. Steep ridges close in around it, so the built area forms a narrow, winding shape.
The town is known for mining. A large phosphate deposit has been worked here for decades, supplying Brazil's fertiliser industry, and the mine and processing site form a distinctive area on the map. Beyond that, the Ribeira valley holds some of the largest remaining stretches of Atlantic Forest in the country.

Mining landscape
The phosphate mine and its works cover a large area near the town. Its benches and haul roads show up as geometric forms, clearly different from the residential blocks.
