Itapetininga lies in the interior of São Paulo state, southwest of the capital, in a region of gently rolling farmland. The map shows a city built around a regular grid of blocks at its centre, the characteristic layout of towns in the São Paulo interior, with newer neighbourhoods extending outward in looser patterns along the main roads and across the low hills.
Small rivers and streams wind through and around the urban area, their valleys often left as green corridors that break up the grid. Regional highways connecting the city with Sorocaba, São Paulo and the southern part of the state pass along the edges of the built-up area, forming long, sweeping lines at the margins of the map.
Itapetininga covers one of the larger municipal territories in the state and serves as a centre for the surrounding agricultural region.
