Te mapa
Cananea is a town in the north of Sonora, not far from the border with Arizona. It sits at high elevation in grassland and mountains, and its history is tied to copper. The Cananea mine is among the largest copper operations in Mexico, and the open pits and tailings beside the town are visible on any map of the area.
The town has a straightforward layout: a grid of blocks set on sloping ground, streets running up towards the hills, and main roads leading out towards Arizona and the rest of Sonora. Next to it, the mine creates a very different pattern of terraced benches, haul roads and broad engineered surfaces.
In 1906, a strike by Mexican miners at Cananea became one of the key events leading up to the Mexican Revolution. A Cananea map poster shows the town and the mine together, since each has shaped the other for more than a century.
The copper workings beside the town cover a large area. Terraced pits and haul roads form concentric, contour-like patterns that differ sharply from the street grid.
Cananea's streets form a regular grid laid over rising ground. The blocks climb towards the surrounding hills and give the town a compact outline.
The Cananea miners' strike of 1906 is remembered as a forerunner of the Mexican Revolution and is an important part of the town's identity.
