Guaymas occupies the shore of a sheltered bay on the Gulf of California, in the state of Sonora. The town is squeezed between the water and rugged, bare hills, so its streets run in narrow strips along the shore and push up into the valleys. On a map the coastline is the main feature, full of inlets, points and small islands.
The honorific Heroica recognises the town's defence against foreign attacks in the nineteenth century. Guaymas has long been an important Pacific port for Sonora, and it is known for its shrimp fishery. The resort area of San Carlos, with its distinctive rocky peaks, lies a short drive to the northwest along the coast.
