Te mapa
Prambanan lies on the plain between Yogyakarta and Klaten on Java, and it is known worldwide for its temples. The main Prambanan compound, built in the ninth century and dedicated to the Hindu Trimurti, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a map its precise square enclosures, arranged in nested courtyards, stand out clearly among the curving village streets.
Around the main site are other temples, including the large Buddhist complex of Candi Sewu to the north. To the south, the Ratu Boko site sits on a raised plateau. The Opak River runs past the temple grounds, and Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, rises to the north.
A Candi Prambanan map poster puts the geometry of the temple compounds in the centre, surrounded by villages, rice fields and the river. The contrast between the square temple plans and the looser pattern around them gives the map its character.
The main Prambanan compound is laid out in concentric square courtyards, whose strict geometry is very visible from above.
North of the main temples, the Sewu complex adds another rectangular enclosure, part of the group of historic sites that covers this plain.
The river runs near the temple grounds in a narrow, winding line and separates the heritage areas from the villages around them.
