Cannaregio is the most populous of Venice's six sestieri, stretching across the northern part of the city from the railway station to the edge of the lagoon. Its map has a distinctive structure: several long, straight canals run parallel to one another, lined by fondamenta walkways, giving the district a rhythm unlike the tighter, more irregular core around San Marco and Rialto.
The district is home to the Venetian Ghetto, established in 1516, where the city's Jewish community was required to live and from which the word ghetto passed into many languages. Its squares and tall buildings are still clearly visible on the map. Cannaregio is also where Tintoretto lived and worked, and the church of Madonna dell'Orto holds several of his paintings.
The Strada Nova cuts a broad path through the southern part of the district, and the railway causeway from the mainland reaches the city at Santa Lucia station on its western end. A Cannaregio map poster draws all of this in fine line: canals as pale ribbons, bridges as small crossings, and the lagoon opening out to the north toward Murano.
Long, straight canals run side by side across the north of the district, flanked by walking quays, creating one of the most regular patterns anywhere in Venice.
The historic Jewish quarter forms a compact island of squares and tall houses, reached by bridges and clearly legible within the surrounding lanes.
The northern shore faces the open lagoon, with the Fondamente Nove looking out toward the cemetery island of San Michele and Murano beyond.

Koteā ko Cannaregio
Many visitors find their way to Cannaregio after the crowds of San Marco and remember it for evening walks along quiet canals. A map of this sestiere is a more personal choice than a view of Venice as a whole.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a date, an address or a few words in Italian, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download 300 DPI files for $9 or order a matte print, framed or unframed.
