Cannes lies on the Côte d'Azur between the Esterel hills and Antibes, facing the Mediterranean across the Bay of Cannes. Its map is organised by the shoreline: the Boulevard de la Croisette runs along the beach from the Palais des Festivals to the Pointe de la Croisette, while the town climbs gently inland in a mesh of streets and villa gardens.
West of the Old Port rises Le Suquet, the medieval core, where lanes wind up to a hilltop church and watchtower. The old quarter on its small hill forms a knot of narrow, winding lanes above the Old Port, clearly different from the straighter streets of the later town.
