Te mapa
Carbonia was founded in 1938 in the Sulcis region of southwest Sardinia, built to house workers for the island's coal mines. Its origin is clear on the map: a planned town with a central square, straight avenues and regular residential blocks, a sharp contrast to the organic street patterns of older Sardinian towns.
The architecture of the founding period, with its rationalist public buildings, still defines the centre. The former Serbariu mine on the edge of town now houses the Museo del Carbone, the coal museum, and the Phoenician and Punic site of Monte Sirai stands on a hill nearby.
A Carbonia map poster captures the logic of a designed town: the formal centre, the geometric residential districts, and the mining areas and hills beyond. In black and white the planned layout reads with particular clarity, making it a strong print for anyone interested in twentieth-century urban planning or with family ties to the mines.
The central square and its surrounding public buildings form the heart of the planned town, with main streets leading directly away from it.
Residential neighbourhoods follow a regular, deliberate layout, with blocks and streets arranged in clear geometric patterns across the town.
The former mine site on the town's edge, now a museum, occupies a distinct area on the map that recalls why Carbonia was built.

Koteā ko Carbonia
Carbonia is a place of family histories, with generations who came from across Sardinia and Italy to work the mines. A map of the town is a fitting tribute, and its planned layout makes a striking graphic print.
