Te mapa
Carlow is the county town of County Carlow in Leinster, set on the River Barrow where the smaller River Burrin joins it. The river is the defining line on the map. It runs along the western side of the town centre, with Graiguecullen on the opposite bank, and the streets rise gently away from the water into a compact web of shops and terraces.
Its position on the Barrow made the town strategically important for centuries. The ruin of Carlow Castle, built by the Normans in the early thirteenth century, still stands near the river, and the Cathedral of the Assumption marks the centre. Carlow College, founded in 1782, is among the oldest third-level institutions in Ireland, and the town also has a large technological university campus.
A Carlow map poster brings out the relationship between river and town: the curve of the Barrow, the bridges, the navigation channel and the roads heading toward Dublin, Kilkenny and Wexford. Beyond the edges, fields and hedgerows take over quickly, so the print has a clear, readable centre framed by open country.
The Barrow runs along the west side of the centre and forms the town's main axis. The Burrin meets it nearby, and the Barrow Navigation continues south toward the sea.
The surviving walls of the Norman castle stand close to the river crossing, a reminder of why a town grew at exactly this point on the Barrow.
Graiguecullen, on the western bank, lies in County Laois, yet on the map it reads as part of Carlow, joined to the centre by the river bridges.

Koteā ko Carlow
Carlow is a town many people pass through on the way south, and a place where many students first live away from home. A map of it captures the walk from the river to the college and all the streets in between.
