Te mapa
Carol City grew in the 1950s and 1960s as a planned suburb north of Miami, on land so flat that the streets could be drawn with a ruler. From above it is almost all grid. Long numbered avenues and streets form large blocks, with smaller curving residential loops inside them and canals running in straight channels.
In 2003 Carol City became part of the new city of Miami Gardens. Miami Gardens is also home to Hard Rock Stadium, whose large oval and surrounding parking lots stand out on any map of the area. The Florida Turnpike and other expressways cut diagonally or in wide curves across the regular pattern.
A Carol City map poster shows classic American suburban planning: a strict square framework filled with softer shapes, and waterways that look more engineered than natural. In black and white, the pattern becomes almost textile, even and easy to recognise for anyone who grew up here.
Wide arterial roads create a large-scale grid. Inside each square, residential streets curve and loop, giving the map two layers of pattern.
Straight canals run through the neighbourhoods. They are a typical South Florida feature and add long thin water lines to the print.
The stadium bowl and its huge parking areas make a clear open shape on the map. It is the best-known landmark of the surrounding city.
