Catemaco sits on the western shore of Lake Catemaco, in the volcanic Los Tuxtlas region of southern Veracruz. The town faces the water, and from above its streets slope toward a lakefront promenade. The lake itself dominates any map of the area, a broad sheet of water ringed by green hills and dotted with small islands.
The town is widely associated with curanderos and brujos, practitioners of traditional healing and folk magic, and an annual gathering held each March draws visitors from across Mexico. On the lake, boat trips pass islands including one known for its colony of monkeys. The surrounding landscape of cones, forest and water is among the most distinctive in the Gulf coast region.
