Challakere lies in Chitradurga district, in the semi-arid interior of Karnataka. The land around it is open and gently rolling, with scattered rocky outcrops and seasonal tanks. On the map the town appears as a compact cluster, and several main roads leave it in long straight lines towards other district towns.
It is widely known for its groundnut oil mills, and some people call it an oil city for that reason. In recent years, the plateau to the west has become home to large national research and testing facilities. From above, their fenced grounds appear as large, simple shapes in otherwise open country.
