Te mapa
Chanaje lies in Raigad district near Uran, on the eastern side of Mumbai harbour. From above, it sits in a landscape where land and water are closely mixed. Tidal creeks and mangroves wind through low ground, salt pans form flat geometric patches, and roads and railway lines serving the nearby port cut straight lines across the whole area.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, one of India's major container ports, is close by, and its container yards, terminals and access roads make large, regular shapes on the map. A Chanaje map poster shows how these industrial grids sit next to much older village streets and to the soft, irregular edges of the creeks.
Across the harbour to the west lies Elephanta Island, with its famous rock-cut cave temples, and beyond it the dense city of Mumbai. Chanaje belongs to the fast-changing mainland side of the harbour, where Navi Mumbai and the port have reshaped the area. In black and white, this mix of water, industry and settlement becomes a striking composition.
Creeks and mangrove fringes wind through the low ground around the settlement, adding soft, organic shapes that contrast with the port's straight lines.
Container yards, terminals and wide access roads of the nearby port form large rectangles and long corridors that dominate part of the map.
Mumbai harbour opens to the west, with Elephanta Island across the water, placing Chanaje on the mainland edge of one of India's busiest waterfronts.
