Te mapa
Kalyān sits on the Ulhas River, at the inland edge of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in Maharashtra. From above, the creek bends past the western side of town. Mudflats and mangrove edges soften the shoreline before the water turns toward Thane and the sea. The older part of the city is near the waterfront, where streets are tight and irregular and follow the ground.
The shape that stands out most is the railway. Kalyan Junction is a major stop on the Central line, where tracks from Mumbai divide toward Kasara in the northeast and Karjat in the southeast. Those long yards and branching lines run straight through the town. On a Kalyān map poster they read like the veins of a leaf, with dense housing packed tightly around them.
Kalyān was a trading port long before the suburbs arrived, and ships once came up the creek. Durgadi Fort stands above the river, a reminder of the town's strategic past. Together with neighbouring Dombivli, the city forms one municipal corporation. Every day, large numbers of commuters travel from here to Mumbai.
Tracks and sidings split into separate lines here. They form the strongest shape on the map, a bold branching pattern set among the smaller streets.
The river curves along the town's western and northern side. Its wide, soft edges set off the tight urban fabric beside it.
Near the waterfront the street pattern turns irregular and fine-grained. It is a clear contrast to the straighter roads of newer housing further out.
