Bhayandar lies at the northern edge of the Mumbai metropolitan area, in Thane district, where the city gives way to creeks and marshland. Together with Mira Road it forms the Mira-Bhayandar municipal corporation. Water shapes the town's map. A tidal creek runs along its northern side and separates it from Vasai across the estuary.
The Western Railway line runs north to south through the town, and much of daily life follows it, with stations and markets on either side. Salt pans, mangroves and wetlands surround the built-up area as wide open spaces. Dense residential blocks sit beside large flat areas crossed by channels and embankments.
