Changling is the seat of Changling County in Songyuan, in the west of Jilin Province. It lies on the Songnen Plain, one of the broadest flat regions of north-east China, and the town's map reflects that openness: a compact, fairly regular grid of streets surrounded by fields that extend in every direction.
The countryside around Changling includes cropland, grassland and many small shallow lakes and wetlands, some of them saline, which appear on the map as scattered irregular shapes. The wider Songyuan area is also known for oil production, and straight access roads and field boundaries crisscross the plain in long, even lines.
