Chengyang is the urban centre of Ju County in southeastern Shandong, a region of low hills and broad farmland inland from the Yellow Sea coast. From above the town is compact and orderly: long straight avenues cross at right angles, dividing the ground into large residential and commercial blocks typical of Chinese county seats that grew rapidly in recent decades.
The name Ju goes back much further. It belonged to a small state of the Zhou period, and the county still carries that identity. On the map, history is subtler than the modern grid, but the river corridor and the older, denser pockets near the centre hint at a town that existed long before its current avenues.
